PRACTICE


The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) is a Federal Government Agency established to regulate and control the practice of advertising in Nigeria.  It was established by Act 55 of 1988, as amended by Act 23 of 2022.

Its responsibilities include but not limited to:

  1. Determining appropriate standards of advertising practice and ensuring compliance with those standards by persons and organisation who engage in or utilise advertising services.
  2. Conducting professional examinations that qualify persons for a career in advertising and accrediting advertising programmes in tertiary institutions.
  3. Registration of persons to practice advertising in Nigeria and maintaining a register of bona fide practitioners, among others.

 

  1. DIRECT REGISTRATION

(a)     Qualification:

The following qualifications are acceptable for registration in the associate membership category.

  1. ARCON Professional Diploma in Advertising
  2. CIM or CAM Diploma in Advertising or Marketing
  3. HND or Degree in Advertising, Marketing, Mass Communication or Graphic Arts (Design) from ARCON accredited departments in tertiary institutions
  4. A recognized Post Graduate degree in Advertising, Marketing, Mass Communication or Graphic Arts (Design) from ARCON accredited departments in tertiary institutions
  5. Any other qualification that may be approved by the Council

Entrants into the profession are registered initially as Associate (or as student members if they are undergoing a relevant course of study).

  1. UPGRADING OF MEMBERSHIP

(i)   Full Membership

Associate members seeking upgrading to full membership category should satisfy the Council that in the 5 years immediately preceding the date of their application that he/she has been in continuous active practice as an advertising or marketing communications practitioner, amongst others.

(i)   Fellowship

Fellowship is considered on the practitioner’s merit.  Application for consideration as fellow is open to full members of the advertising profession who have practiced for a minimum 15 years from date of first registration and have met the criteria for fellowship consideration.
